Researchers at Pitt are leading a pioneering study on ketamine therapy for depression.
A new depression treatment is showing encouraging results. Amy Gray is having breakfast at Café Italiano in Jeannette. It may not appear to be much, but it is significant for Gray, who suffers from treatment-resistant depression. "I've had it 35 years," she explained. Gray recently took part in a University of Pittsburgh study on the effects of ketamine on persons like her. The study is being led by Dr. Rebecca Price. "The primary mode of administration of ketamine as a clinical treatment is intravenous infusion," Price explained.
Ketamine has been used as an anesthetic for many years. It was discovered to treat persons suffering from depression entirely by chance. So, how exactly does it work? Researchers are unsure, but they believe it has something to do with anything specific. "By inducing a burst of brain plasticity," Price explained. "Chronic stress has an impact on the brain, and when you're depressed, you find the brain has lost some of its flexibility and plasticity." "Ketamine appears to restore that quickly in the brain," she noted. Doctors emphasized that the ketamine infusions are given in a highly controlled atmosphere and in minimal amounts to avoid any addictions.
